New socially distanced comedy club to open its doors in reading


Mates Rates Comedy, an organisation that hosts comedians in Central Reading, has announced they are launching Reading’s first socially distanced comedy club.

Comedy @ Turtle is set to take place downstairs at The Purple Turtle on Friday October 23, from 7:30-9:30pm and return every 2 weeks.

Founder of Mates Rates Comedy Nick Byard said “Following the success of our outdoor Summer Showcase it is great to be putting on shows again.”

Partner and MC Carl Richard said “I am proud to be supporting artists and the service economy. We need places like The Purple Turtle and we need live comedy.”

Headlining the event is Harriet Kemsley, with Maria Shehata, Harjeet Cheema and Sharlin Jahan as supporting comedians.

Organisers have stated that the lineup is subject to change.

Due to social distancing, tickets are only available in advance. Box Office closes at 11:30pm on Thursday 22 October.

What can punters expect?

Due to socially distancing there will be some changes, tickets must be booked in bubbles up to 6.

“We are asking punters to arrive early to avoid queues forming”. “The doors will be open to improve air flow and different bubbles will be separated from one other.”

Punters will be asked to follow the government’s guidelines around masks and social distancing.

How to get tickets

Comedy @ Turtle will be held from 7:30pm to 9:30pm on Friday, October 23.

Tickets are already sold out. However tickets for future shows will be available to buy in advance, costing £12 from Fatsoma.
