Rain has been pouring down over the Wokingham Borough, causing flooding locally as Storm Alex takes hold.   A weather warning has been issued for much of the country.

A weather expert has said, “at this time of year, trees are in full leaf and drains can become blocked from tree debris. Given the severe weather this weekend, the Met Office is urging people to keep a close eye on the forecast and warnings during this spell of challenging and disruptive weather.”

The expert is also urging people to remain a safe distance from swollen rivers and not to drive though flood water.  Flood water is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car.

A number of areas of Wokingham and surrounding areas have been affected including Maiden Erleigh, Emmer Green and Shinfield.  The River Loddon has also now burst its banks and the Showcase Cinema is beginning to flood.

A Wokingham resident who lives near the Embrook river, has confirmed that, “the river has risen to just within a few inches of entering his property”.  Although rather frustrated he says that, “all he can do is to remove belongings to a higher ground and let nature take is course”.

Drivers are also being urged to take care on the roads due to mounting surface water.
